Ginger Rogers' Date Butterscotch Pudding

"Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, except backwards and in high heels."

My sorority girls proved their mettle this morning when we shared Ginger's Butterscotch Pudding for breakfast. Who in their RIGHT MIND eats tapioca? When boiled with water it turns into frog spawn and when butter, sugar and dates are added it resembles anaemic caviar. Yeuch.

Grace proclaimed that it was "not very appealing" and Ginger's namesake composed a song:

Oh, that slimy tapicoa
It makes me want to choka
Or throw it at a bloka
Who's happened
To tiiick me off

When we should have been leaving to go to work we discussed how we could feed a whole pan of it to the chaw-bacon until his belly expanded into a big fat drum.

That would serve him right for not letting me have that Cliff 78rpm.

Frog spawn....Ive never tried tapioca and well that...didnt make me want to try it.

Ginger has a recipe (sort of) in her book "Ginger:My Story" for her "untroubled eggs". You should try it one of these days and tell me how it goes!

Oh brilliant! Thanks for that titbit SassyGinger - I shall get hold of that recipe STAT and try it. Sounds a bit like the antidote to Dorothy Dandridge's "Emotional Omelet"!

Here ya go -

Straight from Ginger's book:

Two eggs whipped in a mixer with a quarter cup of milk per person. Place this in the top of a double broiler, being sure not to have too much water in the bottom pan maybe only an inch. Cover the eggs and time for three minutes per egg. When the timer goes off, take a wooden spoon and gently scrape the bottom of the pan holding the eggs. If there is still too much moisture, cover again for another minute. After three minute per egg has been tallied, look at the eggs again - they should look like a custard, as if they've never been troubled. Spoon a helping onto each warm plate and announce that salting and peppering is to each person's desire.

Fantastic! I'm always keen to get my double boiler out so am definitely having a go at this one! Thanks for sharing x

Cool! According to the book, this was part of a rather extensive meal Ginger prepared for her husband after he sort of challenged her cooking skills. Unfortunately that meal was never eaten because Jack came home and announced he was getting shipped out with the Marines that night. :(
